How to cook an artichoke
Many of us are used to buying artichoke hearts from our local deli. However, fewer of us would know what to do with them if we got some whole and fresh.
It's actually really easy and I'm going to explain what to do here.
What you'll need:
- A steamer OR a pot/steamer basket (if you have one)
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Sea Salt and Pepper to taste
If you have an electric steamer simply fill with water, peel off or cut away a few layers of the leaves and stem til you get a bit closer to the centre heart. Place in steamer.
If you use a stove top you can either boil them in water or pop them in a steam basket on top of the water and steam them for a few minutes until cooked throughout.
Set aside too cool.
Once cooled, peel off any excess leaves that aren't eatable. You'll know which ones you can't eat as its more like a leaf (tough and a big green) on top rather than softer meatier texture within heart.
Chop the hearts into quarters and drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice and season with sea salt and pepper.
Enjoy as they are, serve on antipasto plater, great for pizza toppings and in salads.
